A DOCUMENTARY FILM BY ALICE AGNESKIRCHNER

The majority of people wish to live as long as possible, it almost seems that we all would like to run away from “natural” death, we wish to live “forever”. Those who despair of life want to get ahead of “natural” death. They want to put an immediate end to life, we say a premature end.

Suicide is a social taboo. Usually, those affected and their relatives are alone with it. Documentary film has the task of telling especially the stories that are forgotten or swept under the table. Based on personal life fates, “Why does someone want to die?” provides insight into a world in which the fear of life has become an everyday occurrence. In addition to Germany, where the suicide rate is higher than the number of traffic fatalities, we want to visit, among other countries, South Korea, where the suicide rate among youths of school age is one of the highest in the world. The film wants to track down personal stories in several countries, work out the respective context and thus enter a discourse. Ultimately, it is also about telling what makes our lives worth living.

The development for this project is funded by the BKM – The Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
